Mondaino's fortress

The history and origins

Mondaino was probably founded by the Etruscans who settled in the main Apennine valleys. In reference to the deer that once were numerous in the forests of this area, this little town was called "Mondaino", the main attractions, a beautiful square and a fortress from which you can admire a splendid panorama. The Roman period led to the establishment of many towns and productive among which are the Vicus Dianensis famous for the temple dedicated to Diana huntress, from whose ruins were later built the parish church of San Michele Arcangelo and within which we can admire today Interesting paintings by G. Peaks and three frontals with splendid decorations flowers and fruit of the eighteenth century. Lombard was raised during the parish church dedicated to Sant'Apollinare Martyr to witness the role of cultural and social communities covered. The city was the scene of Mondaino meetings historians, the most important are the 1393, when it was signed the peace agreement between Carlo Malatesta and his eternal enemy Antonio da Montefeltro, and 1459, when the encounter took place between two other eternal enemies such as Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta, and the Duke of Urbino Federico II.

Places to visit

Of great impact and visible from the valley floor is la Rocca Malatesta in fine architecture of the fourteenth century. Original work of Mondainesi construction, is considered Malatesta because of the many interventions taken by the lords of Rimini. Inside the fortress today can admire the Madonna del Latte, fresco by Bernardino Dolci, and the Museum of Palaeontology tripoli mondainese. The tripoli is a sedimentary rock formed over millennia by the continuous and fossilize deposited on the seabed of microscopic diatoms and radiolari. Nowadays we can find samples of fish and plants fossilized lived millions of years ago. Another masterpiece of this small town, visible when you come out of the fortress is the characteristic Piazza Maggiore, with its neoclassical portico by Francesco Cosci. The enchanting scenery of the city's urban Mondaino each year in mid-August, is the stage of a big medieval festival called the Palio of Deer. Tournaments, conventions, exhibitions and fashion shows evoke the great moments of a glorious and historic past.
